Biographical Note
Gamze Tosun pursues a PhD Degree in Communication Studies at Kadir Has University, and works in the ERC Starting Grant project, “Staging National Abjection: Theatre and Politics in Turkey and Its Diasporas.” Her PhD project explores the history, politics, and aesthetics of Islamic performance in Turkey and its connected geographies. Combining archival and ethnographic research, she analyzes how Islamic communities have employed theatre to negotiate and intervene in the politics of belonging since the Cold War. She was awarded Ernst Mach Grant – Worldwide in 2022 for her research project “Islamic Theatre in Turkey and Its Diasporas—The Case of Austria.” Gamze completed her BA in Western Languages and Literatures at Boğaziçi University, and received her MA in Cultural Studies at Sabancı University. Prior to her PhD studies, she worked at Hrant Dink Foundation as the project coordinator of “Media Watch on Hate Speech” and “Towards a New Discourse and Dialogue.”
