Biographical Note
Andrea Tollardo was visiting Ph.D. at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Vienna in the academic year of 2021/2022 until February 2023 and a Ph.D. candidate in the Doctorate of Cultural and Social Anthropology (DACS) at the University of Milano-Bicocca (Italy). He is interested in the anthropology of labour, migrations, and extraction, with a geographic focus on Europe and the European Alps.
He conducted research in a mountainous locality in the Italian Alps characterised by economic collapse after the Great Recession of 2008. The main objective of his research is to analyse the processes of emplacement and displacement of migrant workers in the context of economic crisis, job shortage and de-industrialization. In particular, he is looking at labour in a mountainous non-urban industrial locality in the middle of Europe that has witnessed transformations of labour relations common to neoliberalism during the past thirty years.
His research aims at taking into account both local historical specificities and global socioeconomic factors. He is thus examining local historical property relations (particularly regarding the great importance of community commons in the area), and broader socioeconomic processes of global reconstitution of capital.
