Author(s)
Peter Rohrbacher
Abstract

The Austrian linguist Werner Vycichl (1909–1999), is still regarded as one of the most prominent experts in the field of historical comparative African studies. Based on archival sources, this article presents in detail his scientific career and role during the national socialist period. The main part evaluates Vycichls extensive literature, focusing mainly on his acceptance outside the German-speaking world. A separate section presents Vycichls pioneering development of a new comparative method in the 1950s.
