Abstract

This introductory article examines key areas of modern research on transport infrastructures in the circumpolar North. Using case studies on railways and highways, as well as on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) and its main points, the authors analyze the most important aspects of the social life of infrastructures. A number of key concepts they use such as remoteness, temporality, incompleteness, identity, embeddedness, promises, mobility and supply help to reveal the role of transport infrastructures in the development of regions of the Russian North and to analyze the areas and practices of local people's involvement in the modification and adaptation of various projects and initiatives to perform their everyday tasks.
