Abstract

Results of a research on the first phases of the institutionalization of ethnology in Vienna are presented. From the formative phase (1870-1884) to the second phase of the institutionalization (1884-1929) the progressive establishment of ethnography can be highlighted against the background of intensive scientific exchanges in the Anthropological Society in Vienna. The research took place mainly in the archive of the Anthropological Society, but other places, such as the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the museum for folklore studies as well as the museum for ethnology, and the university, were also mentioned to explain, how the institutionalization of ethnology occurred during this period.
