Introduction: Memories on the Move—Experiencing Mobility, Rethinking the Past
- Author(s)
- Monika Palmberger
- Abstract
Based on a review of the first interdisciplinary explorations of memory and migration, the Introduction highlights the need for closer ethnographic inspection of memory practices in the context of different mobility regimes. It underscores the importance of going beyond methodological nationalism while acknowledging the persistent power of the nation state both to regulate mobility and to define the past. Moreover, it draws attention to the agentive dimensions of memory practices, to how, when and by which means and media people on the move remember and communicate memories in various contexts of (im)mobility. Finally, it provides an overview of the book’s three parts: Mnemonic Dimensions of Exile, Mediating Memories on the Move and Legacies and Politics of Memory.
