Questions of subjectivity and endurance: violence and the everyday in ethnographies of Palestinian ways of being in the world

Moderation: Andre Gingrich (Austrian Academy of Sciences, University of Vienna)

Ethnographers of Palestinian everyday life as well as of Israeli techniques of domination have both employed various iterations of the concept “the normalization of violence”. It has been used to account for how Palestinians endure the ongoing-ness of Israeli colonial violence through practices that seek to render it as an ordinary or normal part of their everyday.
And it has been used to account for the various ways in which the Israeli state attempts to render its technologies of colonial violence into routine legitimate bureaucratic practices.
This talk aims to interrogate, complicate, and extend the conceptualization of “the normalization of violence” in relation to the dynamic between Palestinian modes of life under Israeli modes of colonial domination, with reference to dimensions of the recent May 2021 Palestinian rebellion.
