FWF project for Peter Rohrbacher

07.07.2025

The research project "Austrian socio-cultural anthropology 1945-1965" will examine Austrian social-cultural anthropology from 1945 to 1965, focusing on its numerous interdisciplinary connections and international networks.

Congratulations!

Particular attention will be given to the “legacy” of National Socialism and Catholic networks during the post-war period. A significant part of the research will explore international funding institutions, such as UNESCO, which facilitated numerous ethnological field studies, or the Wenner-Gren Foundation, which established an interdisciplinary anthropological conference centre at Burg Wartenstein in Lower Austria in 1958.

The project is supported by the following partners:

  • the Royal Anthropological Institute in London,
  • the Anthropos Institute in Sankt Augustin,
  • the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research in New York.

Based at the Institute for Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology at the University of Graz, the project offers a four-year Pre-doc position. It is scheduled to start in spring 2026.
