Filmscreening: WHAT‘S UP/WhatsApp? Media framing and everyday practice of the virtual community - student short films

Representing SS 2023 VS WHAT‘S UP/WhatsApp? Umgangsformen und Alltagspraxis virtueller-Welten

Benedikt Novak (script & editing) 2023: Margaretner Graffiti Studie. Video version of the photo book of the same name. 6'02". Own production, A.

The topic I chose is best classified in the thematic field "From rock art to social media" given in the seminar - I dedicate myself to the so-called "graffiti research". My focus is not necessarily on the beautiful, colorful and large graffiti that can be seen on the Danube Canal or on suburban trains, for example, but rather on small tags/wall slogans, doodles/scribbles, slogans, drawings or simply word graffiti. The actors often want to leave personal messages on various surfaces. Word graffiti is described by author Thomas Northoff as: "An unofficial expression that no one has asked for, and which individuals urge to be expressed. (Northoff 2017, Ö1 interview).

Pablo Scheuhammer (script & editing): 2023 Stuwergschichtn. 1:20:03:04. Own production, A.

For this work I decided to get to know the so-called Stuwerviertel in Vienna's second district better and to bring its individual facets closer to the viewers. Through the process of gentrification, this neighborhood is not only experiencing a change on a cultural level, but also on a social level. More "traditional" institutions such as pubs, restaurants or small shops have to adapt to the changing times and the spread of capitalist-oriented service providers. At the same time, the high immigration of small families and students is clearly noticeable. The former red-light district and the former border of the Viennese "Strich" (streetwalkers district) are experiencing a long-term change. Nevertheless, the charm of times past remains and blossoms in a new context.

Representing WS 2021/22: SE CREOLE MEDIA SOCIETY

Jagoda Katarzyna Witkowska (script & editing) 2022: DESIRED ABUSE. 10'23''. Own production, PL.

The idea for the film appeared when I read another text encouraging me to see the Carravaggio exhibition, a great artist and a major criminal at the same time. It prompted me to ask to what extent the art world allows abusers to shine under the guise of genius. The movie consists of connected footages of other movies and my voice narration appearing in the background. The film aims to draw attention to irregularities and misuses related to the display of artworks created by controversial artists and the reproduction of their image in the artistic discourse.

Marie Vodičková (script & editing) 2022: Nová rota. 20'. Own production, CZ.

In her film, Marie discusses the  military border practices during the 'Cold War'. In interviews with former border guards, she documents the history of political restrictions executed by 'little' soldiers. She shows how they dealt with it and what they repressed. Representing WS 2019/20 VS Was wir sehen, wie wir sehen, wen wir sehen: Von der Idee zur visuellen Dokumentation

Rosa Tschernutter & Miriam Eulert 2020: Community without Borders. 15'23". Own production, Finland/Indonesia.

Rosa & Miriam state: "In our filmic seminar work, we would like to devote ourselves to the diasporas of Finland and Indonesia as well as to the culture in the country itself. In doing so, we try to film an analogy of different aspects such as culinary, subsistence, locomotion or other topics of daily life and to capture the differences as well as the similarities of the two cultures. The film is to be made in the sense of a sensory ethnography / sensory experience. The avoidance of classical interviews and a narrator should allow the viewer a free view of the footage and let the images themselves to have a narrative effect."
