Short Biography

Werner Zips' academic qualifications are Dr. iur. (1981) and Dr. phil. (1989) in Ethnology and African Studies). He has been teaching since 1989. Since 2000 he holds the position of a.o. University Prof. at the University of Vienna. Main academic leadership positions: President of the Society for Caribbean Research (Berlin, Vienna from 2003 – 2009; Executive Board Member in the Commission on Folk Law and Legal Pluralism (2002 - 2008); and Steering Committee Member in the African Borderlands Research Network (ABORNE), funded by the European Science Foundation (2008 - 2014). Zips has co-organised conferences, symposia and workshops for these organisations, which have led to a number of edited volumes.
